The Civic Rambla

San Francisco, CA

Year: 2025
Design: Anastasis Dimokas

Selected from over 173 entries across 9 countries, The Civic Rambla received an Honorable Mention at the ULI San Francisco Market Street Reimagined competition. The Civic Rambla, reimagines San Francisco's most important street-Market Street as a pedestrian-first civic promenade inspired by Barcelona’s La Rambla. The proposal creates a green, active spine connecting the Embarcadero to Civic Center, anchored by a flexible plaza and a dedicated skate park.

The design responds to solar exposure by dividing the promenade into two distinct zones:

The People’s Corridor:
Located on the sunlit side, this vibrant promenade includes wide sidewalks, cafés, food trucks, kiosks, play areas, and farmers markets. Ground and second floors are repurposed for restaurants, cultural venues, and civic uses, bringing life to the street day and night beneath a rhythmic canopy of London plane trees.

The Transit Corridor:
On the shaded side, the proposal replaces the heritage streetcar with a modern Muni light rail line, paired with buses and limited vehicle access. A physically separated, elevated bike lane runs alongside, offering a safe and efficient route for commuters.
